Christmas 2013

We decided to go to Cebu and spend Christmas this year with my parents and brother. I suppose it has been more than 15 years since we last celebrated Christmas together. The trip was really stressful because it was passenger season. But it was really worth lugging heavy bags since the cousins got to goof off and have a lot of fun, and the grandparents got to see all of their grandchildren in one place.

I've included most of the pictures I've taken with my phone in the gallery below. The first few ones are some of the auto-awesomed pics generated by Google. These animated gifs are posted full-size because Wordpress strips off the frames when it generates the smaller versions of these pictures. After having seen these in one place, I now wish I took more burst shots, especially the ones with Papa and Mama. I guess they'll have to be content with the non-animated regular pictures.

20130807_145426Just yesterday, August 7, we had our first academe-focused event, which we called "Enhancing Research with Google Technologies". We partnered with the Kinaadman Research Center (KRC) and through the auspices of Dr. Ester Raagas, Director of the KRC, 67.7% of the entire university faculty population who were also research grantees, were able to learn about Google Drive.

Last July 20, we had our Diversity and Inclusion event for women, which we called "Empowering Women on the Go". We worked with a local JCI chapter, JCI Bai Lawanen, and their members were able to listen to Harriet Fernandez, a director for an IT unit at Xavier University, and Shayryl Mae Ramos, a learning management system administrator, also at Xavier University.

The workshop was on Google Drive and on being able to balance work and home roles. The attendees were able to get great tips from the speakers and were able to see how Google Drive may be able to help improve their lives; as entrepreneurs, as mothers, as women.

Thank you JCI Bai Lawanen, through President Zeanette Jo Cuevas, for helping make this event a success!

Valentine Surprise

Each year, on Valentine's day, I usually surprise my darling wife with a letter/card, or a bouquet of roses. As it was a yearly thing, I knew she sort of expected these surprises; she'd look surprised, but I knew she wasn't really. Occasionally, she does get surprised. Like that time back in Cebu when I bought her a rather intricate bouquet of flowers. Her head spun when she found out how much I paid for it. Surprise!

2013-02-13 21.54.18This year, however, is different. I was not able to prepare anything for her. I didn't get her anything, thinking that I'd just make up for it with dinner, or something. Yes, I didn't plan for this and I feel lousy actually. Last night, after my daughter gave me and my wife her home-made Valentine greeting cards, my wife started chiding me about what I was going to give her the next day. I gave her my usual "I'm not telling" smile and silently kicked myself. I wished I already had something ready, and I found myself already longing for the anticipation of the surprise's revelation.

Obviously, I've already fallen off the bus-called-state-of-preparedness, and my chances of springing a surprise is not looking good. But during this morning's rush, my wife told me to look at my backpack and I got a shock. Sticking out of the front pocket was what clearly looked like greeting card. I pulled out the card from its envelope, opened it, read what she wrote on it, looked at her, and saw her give me that knowing smile. It was her turn to surprise me.

2013-02-13 21.53.51I thank God for this experience. It reminds me that no matter the circumstance, all things turn for good. Far from being a perfect relationship, it is by faith that we've persisted in believing in God's plans and promises for us. And ultimately, it is by His grace that we were given this great relationship to enjoy. I was too concerned with the fact that I did not have anything prepared for this day. God reminds me that more than surprises, and more than how the world celebrates Valentine's day, it is the relationships that He affords and blesses me that I must nurture and be thankful for. "The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does" (Psalm 145:17).

How awesome it is to have Him who is all-faithful to back you up!

on SLMIS

End users complain because the system isn't "user-friendly". FYI, it's meant to be that way. It's the only way we can guarantee that the system will still be helpful 25 years from now.

Migs in the Office!

Miguel got real bored at home and wanted to go and meet his classmates. Since school doesn't start until the 7th, I decided to take him with me to the office. He immediately got busy with the miniclip games and ignored Mjolnir the whole time!
